Well gentlemen, it is yet again time to bid ‘adios’ to another year and begin anew.  2016 has been especially brutal in terms of it taking some of our most beloved entertainers:  David Bowie, Prince, Gene Wilder, Glenn Frey, Merle Haggard, and Gary Shandling as a start.  Hell, it even took Mr. Seaver (Alan Thicke) and Mrs. Brady (Florence Henderson) recently.

So I, for one, am ready to kick 2016’s a** right out the door.

What better way to do that than to focus on the coming year and what possibilities could be, right?

Time for some way-to-early 2017 predictions from yours truly!

The future is not here…yet

With apologies to any of our automotive writers…

Self-driving cars have been all over the news recently. Uber has already been testing them on the streets, with humans inside. However, they have had a few accidents already. They have been deemed unsafe in San Francisco because they can’t distinguish bike lanes. And Uber is currently being threatened with lawsuits over them.

My prediction is that the future of driving, or not driving as it were, is not ready for prime-time. There will be lawsuits and most likely some government regulation in order for further testing. Nothing puts a damper and blockage of time like government regulations. Don’t look for self-driving technology to take that next step until 2018 or after.

Book these now for Oscar

This prediction might not be too bold, as they are already being talked about for Oscar nods. But “La La Land” and “Manchester by the Sea” will both be nominated for multiple Oscar awards. That’s not my prediction though. My prediction is that they will do some splitting of the big prizes.

Casey Affleck will take home the statue for Best Actor for his performance in “Manchester,” but “La La Land” will get the biggest prize of all: Best Picture.

Get ready for the movie musical!

Speaking of “La La Land”, it is a modernized version of the old school movie musical. There is no bigger copycat industry than film and television. If one Marvel superhero movie was a hit, then we must make ALL superhero comics into movies, right? That’s always been the thinking in the industry.

Well gentlemen, brush up on your old school Busby Berkley movies, like this one.

“La La Land” will be successful. In some terms, it already is. So I guarantee there are already several more movie musicals in production. My prediction is that we will see at least two more—in addition to “La La Land” by the end of 2017.

Let’s get to sweatin’

No gentlemen, I haven’t gone crazy.  I’m not predicting a comeback of Richard Simmons and the infamous sweatin’ to the oldies workout routine.  I have my limits. And sanity.

The sweating I’m referring to is the breakout artist of 2017: Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats. The group had a moderate hit with the song “S.O.B.” this year. But have already been booked at the Forecastle Festival in Louisville for 2017, and are about to explode in the coming year.

Why?  They play hard-driving, funky blues like this….and this….and these. And the above mentioned “S.O.B.” Just listen. I won’t need to explain it any further.

Looking back at my previous prediction articles, my track record is what you call “not good.” So take the aforementioned with a grain of salt.

But it sure is fun to think about. Because looking back does nothing.

Until next time, gentlemen…
