Those Who Serve, Succeed

The men following live dual lives. In one, they are pillars of the business, arts and medical communities of Greater Cincinnati. They are leaders in industries as wildly divergent as orthopaedic medicine, steel piping and opera. They are names you may know or ones you may not. But in their other, more private lives, they are men who serve.

They serve institutions and individuals. They serve on boards and as volunteers. They serve with the fervent passion of a person who has made a decision – that the world can be a better place and they want to be a part of making sure it will be.

The men of the 2009 Class of Gentlemen of Style and Substance have managed to create a unique balance in their lives; a balance between work and personal interests, their careers and their communities. Ask them and they may not be able to list all the organizations they have served, but the circle of positive impact they leave on the community is wide.

On the Commitment of Giving
“I’ve always believed that if you sign up for something, you better complete that task. It’s a sense of responsibility. And it’s not just community service. It’s how we operate (at Beacon), the patient always comes first. You treat people the right way and do the right thing and you can never go wrong.â€

On Early Influences
“We moved to Cincinnati when I was five because I had a sister that needed to be hospitalized here. She was in the hospital for two years. I watched my dad, who was not involved in a lot of charities, but he was completely selfless. I also witnessed a lot of charitable work at the hospital. I think that stuck with me.â€

That’s what we’re doing at the foundation, we’re trying to create a new model where different groups come together to create new joint-funding opportunities.â€

On the Rewards of Giving
“It started when I was on the Board of the Freestore Foodbank. I heard the idea of starting a free store for teachers. I have had a lot of fun helping kids and the teachers. I get a lot more out of it than I give. I like to get dirty. I like driving the forklift. I feel so good when I give back. I’ve been so fortunate in my life. Everyone should give back. Not just money, though that’s important. Everyone should give back with time.â€

On Service and Family
“I was born and raised in Alabama. Growing up, my great-grandma, grandma and mom were all very service-oriented. We were involved in service at our church. I guess I have always had a mindset of service. And when I moved to Cincinnati after college, I wanted to keep that going and develop it further. When I became president of GiveBack Cincinnati, I realized that it was an opportunity to serve more people and I believe that you have to serve in order to lead.â€

On Collaborating to Stop Violence
“There really is nothing that cannot be solved when we come together. No one person can do it themselves. It takes people with a shared passion who come from different approaches. It’s like treating someone for lung cancer. You can fight the tumor and get rid of it, but unless you get them out of a house full of asbestos, it will keep coming back. That’s what we are trying to do when it comes to violence. You can’t arrest your way out of the problem, you have to treat the root causes… I believe it can be solved. I am trying to serve my purpose in my generation.â€

On the Call of Service
“Money was not what I was going to chase. It was an accumulation of my life experience. My father had an 8th grade education and I had decided that if I ever had the opportunity to help people, I would. I’ll tell you this- it comes back to you. I probably represented a thousand people who couldn’t pay me and because I did that, I probably represented 10,000 people who could. But helping those people who needed it? It made me feel like, ‘I did it. I made the difference someone needed in their life.’â€

On Combining Passion with Service
“I’m passionate about food and travel and when I can combine my passions with opportunities to serve the community, I find it to be the most enjoyable. I’ve probably hosted 30 dinners over the years at my home to raise money for community organizations. Holidays and cooking and food have always been a big deal to me and in my family. Some people even call me ‘Chef Jaques’ so when (Local food maven) Marilyn Harris and I host these dinners to raise money, it’s a social event that makes a difference.â€

And I think that has been the driving force behind both my professional goals and my civic involvement, because everything I’m professionally and civically involved in is tied to my passion for the city. I think you see it a lot in people of my generation; we want to live in vibrant communities. On The Responsibility of Involvement
“The Opera is almost maniac about being a responsible member of the community. We have to make every opportunity to possible to not only bring people in to experience the Opera, but to take the Opera out into the community. Any chance I get to meet people, to be out and talk, to be in schools, we take it. I really believe that Opera is obliged to a social, community act.â€

On the Advantages of His Career
“I develop these very personal connections and I tend to get really involved with the things my clients care about, and over time, they become the things I care about. Now, my community interests and my legal career are often difficult to distinguish. I feel very lucky. The way the world is today, I think it is increasingly difficult for professional people to volunteer. There’s not enough time when you are trying to stay competitive.â€

On Service
“I believe that giving back is essential, it gives our life purpose, it influences who we are and our vision for the world. I also believe that all of our lives are meant to impact others, that’s something I learned from my parents. If you don’t live to impact others’ lives, then you lead a solitary and lonely life and that’s a life that doesn’t have a lot of purpose.â€
