The PomegranatesIndie rock quartet sweetens up MidPoint’s Indie Summer

By Dave Sander
Turns out there are indeed signs of life in downtown Cincinnati. Fountain Square has been remodeled and rebuilt, and as said in The Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.” They came in droves on Friday night July 10th, to take in the sounds of Cincinnati’s indie pop up-and-comers. Who else? Pomegranates was featured in the closing set.
The Cincinnati quartet delivered an eccentric set of upbeat indie pop rock tunes drawing on material from their debut release, 2008’s Everything Is Alive and 2009’s recently released follow up Everybody Come Outside!
Formed in 2007, the band consists of Joey Cook (vocals, guitars, keys), Isaac Karns (guitar, vocals, keys), Josh Kufeldt (bass, electric guitar) and Jacob Merritt (drums, percussion). It did not take long for the indie world to take notice of their fresh sound and ability to deliver it live. Supporting slots for the likes of French Kicks, Islands and Jimmy Eat World soon followed.
The title track from the new CD was a particular standout as “Everybody Come Out!” was repeatedly shouted through a megaphone spurring the already enthusiastic crowd. Pomegranates continue to tour in support of their new CD, including an opening slot for critically acclaimed The Walkmen.
